This little bee was just taking her rest, its hard work moving house. Some of the hives in the bee garden are getting ready to swarm. When a hive starts to get overcrowded the queen bee will leave with around half of the colony and look for a new home: We leave some hives empty so that they can do this. A new queen will emerge from the special queen cells in the old hive and the remaining bees will accept her as queen.
Did you know that raw organic honey contains pollen? The bees need the pollen as it contains protein which they use in the winter months when they aren’t able to forage for food. Some believe that if you eat raw local honey over a period of time, you ingest and build up a tolerance to the pollen – this can help reduce symptoms when hay fever season starts.
